While the shell was used as currency in a variety of ancient cultures around the world, it was especially prized in African cultures, where it signified prosperity and protection. Meanwhile, the National Museum of African American History and Culture\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/cowrie-shells-and-trade-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/cowrie-shells-and-trade-power&source=gmail&ust=1737580600423000&usg=AOvVaw1bW2mRSvnah6yF9fG_hz7J\">notes<\/a>\u00a0that, in America, the shell is thought to be a <strong>totem used to resist enslavement<\/strong>. (This has only happened once before, on Bill Clinton’s 1997 Inauguration Day.)<\/p>\n<p>Beyond its status as a <strong>protective talisman<\/strong>, the cowrie is also associated with womanhood and fertility. During his first term, Trump\u2014who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/e-jean-carroll-trump-verdict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/e-jean-carroll-trump-verdict&source=gmail&ust=1737580600423000&usg=AOvVaw17Q31ivRbT_qEKEmDF497X\">found liable for sexual abuse<\/a>\u00a0in May 2023\u2014made continuous efforts to erode women’s rights, which included appointing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/brett-kavanaugh-confirmed-supreme-court-justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/brett-kavanaugh-confirmed-supreme-court-justice&source=gmail&ust=1737580600423000&usg=AOvVaw0lCMJUnFM12C4tHdtSZb-f\">Brett Kavanaugh<\/a>, who was accused of attempted rape, to the Supreme Court. Even after Trump left office, his insidious, anti-women agenda continued to rear its head when the conservative-leaning Supreme Court\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/supreme-court-roe-v-wade-overturned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/supreme-court-roe-v-wade-overturned&source=gmail&ust=1737580600423000&usg=AOvVaw0Xh61z44QEGWDBgQCPSjEF\">overturned Roe v. This is not just, as I <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/volokh\/2025\/01\/20\/the-supreme-court-justices-enter-the-presidential-inauguration\/\">thought<\/a>, a fashion faux pas.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, there is not a word about whether this move violates any ethical rules. People praise Jackson like they praised Ginsburg’s political sartorial choices. Remember, Justice Jackson is attending the Inauguration, only a few yards away from Trump. But she apparently deems it necessary to wear a talisman to ward off evil? Will Jackson face any recusal motions for all Trump-related cases? Jackson, of all members, should be <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/volokh\/2024\/12\/03\/more-leaks-in-the-ny-times-about-the-supreme-court-ethics-debate\/\">grateful<\/a> there is no “binding” Supreme Court ethics code.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there are never-ending efforts to attack Justice Alito based on the non-political flags his wife chose to fly at their home. Remember almost every single attack on “legal ethics” is just interference, and an attempt to force conservative justices to recuse.
